Session 3, Week 1 From the Camp Directors:
We are halfway through the summer and it feels like we just started! Here’s hoping the next five weeks are as much fun as the first five!
With this session, each day was celebrating a different holiday or event—Monday was our celebration of Valentine’s Day and we got the week off in spirit, doing different rotations of Valentine’s Day-themed activities through the building. One of the coolest things was creating tissue paper flowers, which all the campers did an incredible job making and it really brightened up our arts & crafts room! In the afternoon, we had a great time swimming, climbing on the rock wall, and playing a special version of Valentine’s Dodgeball (the red cupid ball made things interesting!)
We had a field trip on Tuesday to go canoeing at the LSU Lakes—although it was a little hot outside, we stayed cool in the shade and enjoyed the breeze on the water, and everyone had an awesome time on the boats! In the afternoon, we did activities in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, and undoubtedly the highlight of this (in addition to hot potato!) was searching for the pot of gold in the shamrock scavenger hunt through UREC!
On Wednesday, we really turned up the spirit in celebration of April Fool’s Day and spent the morning doing activities that represented the silliness of this day—this included creating a disguise kit (yay fake mustaches!) in Arts & Crafts, while playing a challenging game called Mime Time and spending time outside doing a water balloon toss. In the afternoon, we got to set up the outdoor water slide and campers had water fun in the sun while also cooling off in the pool afterwards.
Thursday was a very special day, as we celebrated Halloween in summer! Campers and counselors alike dressed up in their costumes and we had a great time celebrating all of the creativity—we then did some fun Halloween activities, including a Monster Mash Dance Party, a costume relay, and navigating the giant spider web. In the afternoon, our campers had a chance to show off their costumes even more as they went trick-or-treating throughout UREC, and all of the UREC staff members were kind enough to hand out lots of great candy!
We made Friday a celebration of Cinco de Mayo and had a morning of fun and educational activities—campers spent time in Arts & Crafts learning about the history and traditions of Cinco de Mayo and by making beautiful monarch butterflies, while also playing more active games like Steal the Sombrero and Musical Jumping Beans. In the afternoon, we finished off the week in style, testing our climbing skills on the rockwall, swimming in the pool, and playing Gauntlet in the gym.
It’s been a great first half of the summer and we are enjoying every moment we get to spend with our awesome campers! Thank you to all those families who shared the Tiger’s Den experience with us this week, and we’ll see you soon!
