In a nutshell: UREC’s 3 phases of expansion & redesign

Categories: Expansion Updates,Featured,News

The UREC expansion and redesign project has three phases. We are currently underway in both Phases 1 & 2.  The third phase, the actual expansion and redesign of existing UREC facilities is scheduled to begin late next spring, May 2014.

Phase I

Phase I is the UREC Fields at River Road.  This project is approx. $5.5 million in construction.  It includes 8 multi-purpose sports fields and 4 softball fields set up in a wagon wheel configuration. The support building will also be expanded so that all of our mowers and field maintenance equipment can be housed at this location. It also includes 2 of the 8 fields made with a product called “Fiber Soils,” so that we can assist Athletics on the 7-8 Saturday football games with parking. This phase is anticipated to be complete in Spring 2014. During this phase we also moved the Challenge Course from River Rd. to directly across from UREC’s current entrance and future entrance.

  • Approximate construction cost: Approx. $5.5 million
  • Anticipated completion: Spring 2014

Phase II

Phase II is tennis & parking at the current Student Recreation Complex. We will be adding 360 parking spaces on the north end of the SRC property (toward Lod Cook) and 9 new tennis courts between the new parking lot and the current facility. This parking will be a 2 hour UREC parking lot and is a part of the project funded by the students. Traffic & Parking is not paying for this lot, but will be responsible for maintenance once built. This phase of the project is approx. $3.6 million in construction.  This phase is scheduled to be complete 120 days from Sept. 3, 2013.

  • Approximate construction cost: Approx. $3.6 million
  • Anticipated completion: January 2014

Phase III

Phase III is the expansion & redesign of the current Student Recreation Center. We will be adding 152,000 sq. ft. to the existing facility and doing significant redesign of the current facility. This phase should commence in late Spring of 2014 (late April/May).  It should take approximately 24 months to construct. This phase is approximately $52 million in construction. It will include a leisure pool, indoor running trail, additional court space (we will go from 5 to 10 courts), 45,000 sq. ft. of cardio and weight space, 38′ climbing wall, and additional group fitness studios.

  • Approximate construction cost: Approx. $52 million
  • Anticipated completion: Summer 2016
