The state of LSU and LSU UREC has never been so strong.  Last year, LSU had the 8th largest overall enrollment in university history and the 7th largest enrollment among LSU freshman.  According to the LSU Institutional Research Newsletter from February 2017, LSU has the highest minority enrollment in the last 5 years.  With a large and diverse student population, LSU University Recreation is excited to welcome all students to the Grand Opening celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony on September 8, 2017 beginning at 4:00 p.m.

As we move into the 2017-18 school year, University Recreation looks forward to contributing to LSU students’ success.  A 2016 NC State University study shows that every 1-hour increase in participation of collegiate recreation programs per week equates to a .06 increase in students’ overall GPA.  UREC ‘s own research shows that LSU students who visit UREC 3-4 times a week have higher GPAs than students that visit fewer than 3-4 times per week.  Research continues to demonstrate the relationship between recreation, physical activity, and higher GPAs.  LSU now has another great asset, in the expanded UREC, to support students in the classroom.

The Grand Opening celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony on September 8, signifies the opening of one of the top recreation facilities in the country.  We will provide more programs and facility space than ever before to help students achieve success.  Whatever a students’ physical ability and interests, there are options to get involved, try new activities, and meet new people.  All students are encouraged to find their fit at UREC to positively impact their life at LSU and beyond.

It is important to note that not only is physical activity tied to overall student success, but that the UREC Expansion and Redesign Project was a student lead initiative.  Students assisted with the planning process that began in 2010, students voted on moving forward with this project, and student fees funded the project.

2017-18 is going to be an amazing year for LSU.  LSU UREC is honored to be a contributor to our amazing institution that focuses on students first.  Whether you participate in aquatic programs, sport programs, fitness classes, personal training, adventure trips, paddling clinics or open recreation activities, I look forward to seeing all living a heathy and active life.

On behalf of the UREC Team, geaux be active.
